Texas Retirement Communities..

This page shows Texas retirement communities good for retirement but not age-qualified. For those, please see Texas on our page Southwest Retirement Communities

The number of Texas retirement communities should expand in the future as the high population of senior retirees and seniors from other states discover that Texas offers a lower cost of living. Housing prices reportedly did not have as high appreciation rates during the recent housing boom making housing a good value.

Texas offers a good climate for seniors (mild winters), although the summers are long and hot--something to consider. It has no state tax on social security or income. Property tax is higher but there is talk of some governmental changes. (Please verify all information.)

The major cities are Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. Kerrville, Texas is a well-known retirement area in the popular Texas Hill Country area offering bicycling and walking trails, good air and water, activities for seniors and scenic beauty.

Texas wants you to know about their other areas good for retirement, so they have a program called "Go Texan Certified Retirement Communities." Retire in Texas

See our article "Texas Hill Country--What is it Like"

Many of these communities are in rural areas but have passed strict criteria for senior living to be in the program. I found that they do not have many large active retirement communities in these areas. Smaller areas may be less stressful, however, than cities but make sure they have enough of the amenities you would like to make retirement there enjoyable. However, if you are looking for small towns and low-cost living, Texas is making it easier to find them with this program.
