Both types have income limits to qualify and are described as "affordable housing." HUD (subsidized) are for 62+ and rent is 30% of your income (verify). Communities vary from each other for qualifying so you need to ask.
Affordable housing apartment communities can have long waiting lists - even up to 5 years. You can go directly to the community and fill out an application to get onto a waiting list. Most of these communities have a wait list and HUD does also if you are interested in their properties.
For HUD you can go directly to the apartment to apply or to the HUD office. Try to find new developments from builders just starting with no wait list.

2) Long wait lists for Affordable Housing Rentals
In this time of higher rents many retirees may find it hard to keep up. You can seek help from governmental sources for the county you wish to reside in. The Office on Aging can provide you with lists of housing developments and help you decide what you qualify for.

In addition to contacting the county, you may wish to start with LIHP.org that lists senior affordable housing complexes on their website for both Suffolk and Nassau counties.
We list two types of communities: Affordable Housing and Subsidized Housing (HUD) for each Town. Individual cities are listed under the major Towns.
If your income exceeds the income limits allowed by that county, try another area where the limits are higher. And the reverse, if you do not meet the income requirements, try another area where income requirements are lower. Also ask what the other qualifying rules are as this also varies. Rents and rules change so verify all info.
